Who we are:

Positive Action Charity Organization is a non-religious charity organiza- tion registered with the Ethiopian government. Its founder, Ms. Isheba Tafari, has been living and working in Shashamane since 1997. Our project, the Yawenta Children’s Center, was opened on March 1, 2008.

Where we are:

Shashamane is a rapidly developing town located 250 km south of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. The main sources of income for its population of about 120,000 are agriculture and trade, while jobs in the industrial sector are few. The majority of the people are poor, and many children suffer from malnutrition and diseases caused by lack of hygiene. Education is unaffordable for those who live as beggars or depend on food aid. In addition, Shashamane, a transit town connecting the capital to the eastern and southern regions, has many bars and brothels, leading to a high HIV rate. Some children born to HIV positive mothers are also infected.

Our aims:

1. To ensure the health and survival of children living with HIV/AIDS and other vulnerable children by providing for their nutritional and medical needs;
2. To raise these children to become responsible, independent and self-sufficient adults by providing them with a holistic, education relevant to their needs;
3. To ensure their psychological well-being through counselling and care.

Our beneficiaries:

We started our project in March 2008 with 10 HIV positive children between the ages of 3 and 6. We have been adding more beneficiaries every year since then, both small children to fill up the KG when the older ones entered primary school, and bigger ones based on need. By now we cater for 52 children, including 31 HIV+ children, with more to come this month for the new school year.

What we do:

We provide day-care from Monday to Friday, including Montessori kindergarten and primary school education by qualified teachers. Our children receive four healthy, balanced meals a day, and we pay for all medical costs. We also provide free transportation to and from the project, occasional field trips, and clothes. We advise the parents of HIV positive children on health issues such as vaccinations, food and hygiene. Most of all, we show the children love and care. Recently we have started providing temporary shelter for children whose situation at home is not acceptable.

Why we need help:

Taking care of these children properly takes money. We believe that poor, HIV positive children have the same right to proper food and quality education as the children of rich people. Although we can’t ensure this right for all children everywhere, we can start somewhere: with our 52 little ones. So far, we have run our project on donations from private sources only, although in the future we hope to receive some support from government offices or donor agencies. We therefore depend on your support in order to help these children.

How you can help:

You can contribute by becoming a sponsor for one of our children (see page Sponsorship). For €25 (US$ 35, ₤ 22) a month, we will send you personal information about your child and, if desired, establish direct contact with ‘your’ child in form of letters and/or drawings.

Wer wir sind:

Positive Action Charity Organization ist eine von der äthiopischen Regierung anerkannte nicht-religiöse Hilfsorganisation. Ihre Gründerin Isheba Tafari lebt und arbeitet seit 1997 in Shashamane. Das Yawenta   Kinderzentrum wurde am 1. März 2008 eröffnet.

Wo wir sind:

Shashamane ist eine sich schnell entwickelnde Stadt 250 km südlich der äthiopischen Hauptstadt Addis Abeba. Die Bevölkerung lebt vor allem von Landwirtschaft und Handel; es gibt nur sehr wenige Industriebetriebe. Die meisten Leute sind arm, und viele   Kinder leiden unter Fehlernährung und hygienebedingten Krankheiten. Bildung ist für die, die als Bettler oder von Hilfsprogrammen leben, unerschwinglich. Darüber hinaus hat die Transitstadt, in der sich Straßen aus vielen Regionen Äthiopiens treffen, zahlreiche Bars und Bordelle, was zu einer hohen AIDS-Rate führt. Manche der von HIV+ Frauen geborenen Kinder sind ebenfalls infiziert.

  Unsere Ziele:

• Die Gesundheit und das Überleben von HIV positiven und anderen hilfsbedürftigen Kindern sicherzustellen, indem wir für ihre Ernährung und medizinische Betreuung sorgen;

• Diese Kinder durch eine holistische, ihren Bedürfnissen angepaßte Erziehung zu verantwortlichen, unabhängigen und selbstbewussten Menschen zu erziehen;

• Das psychische Wohlbefinden der Kinder durch Beratung und Betreuung sicherzustellen.

Unsere Schützlinge:

Wir haben unser Projekt im März 2008 mit 10 HIV positiven Kindern im Alter zwischen 2 und 5 Jahren begonnen. Seitdem haben wir jedes Jahr neue Kinder aufgenommen, sowohl kleine Kinder, um die Kindergartenklasse aufzufüllen, wenn die älteren in die Volksschule wechseln, als auch älter Kinder, die besonders bedürftig waren. Wir betreuen heute 52 Kinder, von denen 31 HIV positiv sind, und werden diesen September für das neue Schuljahr weitere Kinder aufnehmen.

Was wir tun:

Unsere Kinder werden Montag bis Freitag in einer gut ausgestatteten Montessori Tagesstätte von qualifizierten Kindergärtnerinnen und VolksschullehrerInnen betreut. Sie bekommen vier ausgewogene, gesunde Mahlzeiten am Tag, und wir übernehmen alle medizinischen Kosten. Außerdem bieten wir freien Transport zum und vom Kinderzentrum, zeitweise Ausflüge und Kleidung. Wir beraten die Eltern von HIV positiven Kindern in Gesundheitsfragen wie Impfungen, Ernährung und Hygiene. Vor allem geben wir allen Kindern viel Liebe und Zuwendung. Vor kurzem haben wir zudem begonnen, Kindern, deren familiäre Situation allzu schlimm sind, auch eine Unterkunft zur Verfügung zu stellen.

Warum wir Hilfe brauchen:

Wir glauben, dass alle Kinder, inklusive mit HIV geborene und behinderte Kinder, das gleiche Recht auf gesundes Essen und qualitativ hochwertige Erziehung haben. Obwohl es nicht möglich ist, diese Grundrechte für alle Kinder und überall sicherstellen, so können wir doch zumindest anfangen: mit unseren 52 Schützlingen, die auf Grund ihrer besonderen Bedürftigkeit ausgewählt wurden. Diese Kinder ordentlich zu betreuen kostet aber Geld. Bisher haben wir unser Projekt nur durch private Spenden finanziert, hoffen jedoch, in der Zukunft auch von der Regierung oder anderen Organisation Unterstützung zu erhalten. Wir sind daher auf Ihre Hilfe angewiesen.
